The CAEI Consortium became one of the first companies to successfully complete the transition from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001:2018, which highlights that the company remains a safe and healthy workplace.

CAEI carried out the transition process with its Occupational Safety, Hygiene and Health (SHySO) team, led by its manager, Ricardo Báez. The scope of ISO 45001 includes cultivation, harvesting and maintenance of equipment for the production of sugar cane, as well as community medical services and maintenance of infrastructure in the sugarcane communities.

With the new standard, the CAEI Consortium will continue to establish and implement an occupational health and safety policy that includes a commitment to provide safe and healthy working conditions for the prevention of work-related injuries and health issues.  This new standard includes a commitment to ensure the consultation and participation of workers.

"We strive to be more efficient every day in all our production processes, being able to successfully migrate to ISO 45001, confirms our commitment to also improve working conditions and quality of life for all employees as a sustainable company that we are," said Alberto Potes, Executive Vice President of CAEI.

Ricardo Báez, SHYSO manager, pointed out that "We have the support of all areas of the company, which allowed us to make the transition smooth and exceed all our expectations."

The OHSAS 18001 standard, which is the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series, will cease to be effective as of 2021.  ISO 45001 is an updated version of OHSAS based on ISO standards sharing a common structure with ISO 9001, 14001 and 27001. This new regulation allows for the identification of external and internal risk factors, as well as tools to address these risks.  Another difference between ISO and OHSAS is that the latter only requires participation of company leadership, whereas the former requires the participation of workers as well.

The CAEI Consortium is also certified with the ISO 9001:2015 standard for its quality management system and the ISO 14001:2015 standard for its environmental system.
