For the third consecutive year, with the support of the Ministry of Labor, the Sugar Consortium of Industrial Companies CAEI organized two educational and training sessions for its new workers before the start of the 2020 – 2021 harvest season, to ensure that they all remain informed with regard to their work contracts, salary earned according to the law, as well as work benefits and responsibilities.

The first session was led by Mayrenis Corniel, Vice Minister of Vulnerable Sectors and Child Labor, at Nuevo Cayacoa in San Pedro de Macorís.  The provincial representative of the ministry, Leonor Martínez, also participated in this session and provided guidance for the workers of CAEI on understanding the benefits of having a formal contract.  In order to maintain adequate social distancing, the session was divided into two groups, both of which received the same training from the Ministry of Labor officials.

Other officials who were present and addressed the workers were Federico Gomera and Juan Ramón Ventura, the directors of the departments responsible for developing Policies for the Prevention and Eradication of Child Labor, and Coordination of the Inspection System, respectively.  Both addressed specific issues such as the legal salary paid to workers as well as duties and benefits.

In addition to the Vice Minister, the session was led by Benigno Trueba, Assistant Vice President of CAEI, Héctor León, the Director of Human Resources of CAEI, as well as Josefina Dieguez, the Director of Sustainability of CAEI.  Additional participants from the Ministry of Labor included Rosa Polanco from the Vice Ministry of Health and Safety at Work and Julia Méndez, Coordinator of Equal Opportunities and Non-Discrimination.

A second educational session was held in Yagüate at the facilities of the former CAEI Sugar Mill.  During this session, Margaret Terrero, the representative of the Ministry of Labor in San Cristóbal, addressed the workers on the necessary commitments that CAEI is responsible for and must fulfill as their employer.  This session was headed by Héctor León, Director of Human Resources of CAEI and Jesús Pineda, Manager of Organizational Development.

The CAEI Consortium continues to maintain a close relationship with the Ministry of Labor, including joint collaborations in disseminating labor regulations and strengthening shared initiatives for the benefit of employees.  This is why such sessions are organized each year with the support of the Ministry of Labor prior to the start of the harvest season.
