Central Romana renews ProTerra Certification for fourth year

For the fourth consecutive year, the PROTERRA Foundation certified the agricultural processes and operations of the Central Romana sugar mill in terms of social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

The renewal of the certification was ratified after an exhaustive on-site audit over the course of five days, during which the assessors toured the facilities of the mill in the industrial zone, the sugarcane fields, the batey communities and the sugarcane outgrowers.

“Once again our agricultural and production processes have the quality seal established by international standards, demonstrating the commitment of responsibility that our company has with its workers and consumers of the sugar we produce” emphasized the management of Central Romana.

The PROTERRA standard is accredited by the certifying agency Foodchain ID, which validated the systems and procedures for the production of sugarcane and its derived products, while also following best practices in terms of implementing, tracing and monitoring all stages of a responsible and sustainable agricultural production.

As part of its policies, PROTERRA bans the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s).

In the harvest that ended in June of this year 2021, Central Romana announced that it had produced almost 400,000 short tons of sugar, after grinding more than 3 million 358 thousand tons of sugarcane.

At that time the company also reported that it paid more than a billion pesos in bonuses to its employees and workers. Central Romana Corporation, Ltd. is the largest private employer in the country, guaranteeing work to more than 20,000 people.
